3. Data processed and purposes
a) Child profile: name, age range, gender, avatar
On first launch an adult creates the child's profile by entering name, age range (3-4, 5-6, 6+), gender and avatar. These are what make the app work as expected: the name for the greeting and for what Sassuovo says to the child, the age range to set how strong Sassuovo plays in two-player games (memory and tic-tac-toe), the gender for grammatical agreement in Italian ("bravo" or "brava"), the avatar so each child recognises their own profile. Several profiles can coexist on the same device, one per child.
This data, together with game progress (collected stickers, completed letters, voice and volume preferences), stays in the app's storage on the device and is never transmitted to us or to third parties. It is not linked to any account, advertising identifier or device identifier.
b) Voice — speech recognition
The educational games use the microphone to listen to the child's spoken answer (e.g. a letter or number name). Speech recognition is handled by the device's own system service, and how it works depends on the platform.
On Android the audio is handled by Android SpeechRecognizer, which may send it to Google's servers to convert speech to text.
On iPhone and iPad the audio is handled by Apple Speech. Sassuovo requests on-device transcription: where the language model is installed — the normal case for Italian on recent devices — the voice never leaves the tablet. Where that model is missing, the system falls back to its own network service, operated by Apple.
The microphone is activated only when the child presses the dedicated button and deactivates automatically after the response. There is no continuous background listening.
c) Content downloaded from sassuovo.app
Games, letters, numbers, writing and drawing work without internet: they are bundled in the app. What is downloaded from our site are the videos and any stories published after installation; at launch, if the device is online, the app checks whether new content is available.
As with any web request, our server records the IP address, timestamp and requested file in its technical logs. These logs exist to run and protect the service (error diagnosis, abuse) and are not used for profiling or to identify who is using the app: they contain no child's name and no profile data, which never leave the device. The app uses no cookies and no tracking identifiers.
4. Legal basis for processing (GDPR)
Profile data is processed on the basis of consent of the parent or legal guardian (Art. 6(1)(a) and Art. 8 GDPR): the adult creates the profile at first launch, after the introduction explaining what name, age and gender are used for, and the adult grants the microphone permission when the operating system asks. Consent can be withdrawn at any time: by deleting the profile in the app's settings, revoking the microphone permission in device settings, or uninstalling the app.
The technical logs of the server hosting downloadable content (section 3c) are processed on the basis of legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) in keeping the service working and secure.
5. Children's privacy (COPPA / GDPR-K)
Sassuovo is expressly targeted at children aged 3 and over. We do not intentionally collect personal information from children without prior verifiable parental consent.
- No online account is created: the child's profile is data that stays on the device.
- Name, age and gender stay on the device and are not linked to any identifier.
- No data is shared with third parties for commercial or advertising purposes.
- The app has no social networks, no chat and no advertising. The only links out open the system browser and lead to our own website: the address www.sassuovo.app and the gadgets page, from which the Etsy shop can then be reached. The gadgets link is protected by a maths question a young child cannot solve, so only an adult can reach it.
If you believe your child has shared information without your consent, contact us at privacy@sassuovo.app and we will delete it immediately.
6. Data retention and deletion
Locally stored data — the child's profile (name, age range, gender, avatar), stickers, progress and preferences — remains on the device as long as the app is installed. From the app's settings you can delete a profile along with its data and progress; uninstalling removes everything, for every profile.
Technical logs of the content server (section 3c) are kept only as long as needed for diagnosis and security, and in any case no longer than 12 months.
For audio data processed by Google via SpeechRecognizer, Google's own retention policies apply. Sassuovo has no access to such data and cannot request modifications on your behalf.
7. Your rights
As a parent or guardian, under the GDPR you have the right to:
- Access — know what data relating to your child we hold
- Rectification — correct inaccurate data
- Erasure — request removal of data ("right to be forgotten")
- Objection — object to processing
- Portability — receive data in a machine-readable format
- Withdrawal of consent — at any time, without consequences
To exercise these rights, write to privacy@sassuovo.app. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority.
8. Security
There is no user database: no child data is stored on our systems, which greatly reduces what could be lost or breached. Our server only hosts the content the app downloads (stories, videos) and the related technical logs described in section 3c. Local data is protected by the app sandbox; communication with the site uses an encrypted HTTPS connection. The microphone permission is requested by the operating system and can be revoked at any time in device settings.
9. Cookies — this website only, not the app
The app uses no cookies and contains no analytics: what the child does inside Sassuovo is not measured by anyone.
This website, on the other hand, uses Google Analytics to know how many people visit it. The Analytics script is not even loaded until you press "Accept" in the banner: if you decline, or simply keep reading without choosing, no measurement cookie is created and no data is sent. We use no third-party service to manage consent: the banner is part of the site and contacts no one.
Your choice is remembered in a technical cookie (`sassuovo_consenso`) holding only the decision, its date and the banner version: twelve months if you accept, six if you decline, after which you are asked again. You can change your mind at any time via "Cookie preferences" at the bottom of every page; when consent is withdrawn, any Analytics cookies already stored are deleted.
The home page also hosts Sassuovo's song, which lives on Spotify. The Spotify player is not loaded until you press "Listen on Spotify": until then the page only shows the cover art, served from our site. When you press the button, the player is loaded from Spotify's servers, which may set its own cookies and process data under its privacy policy. If you never press the button, Spotify is not contacted.
10. Changes to this policy
Any updates will be published on this page with an updated revision date. In the event of material changes affecting the processing of children's data, we will provide appropriate notice via the app or other suitable channels.
